Forró originated in the early 1900s in Brazil’s north-eastern region. Danced normally in couples, it is a genre that combines the accordion, the zabumba (a type of bass drum), the triangle and other instruments to create a style influenced by both European Polka and Contra dance. It is a romantic and intimate dance. Its popularity has been so that historically “to go to the Forró” was synonymous with “going out” or “going to a party” in Northeastern Brazil.
