Leandro Lopes: "Lura, born Maria de Lurdes Assunção Pina (born July 31, 1975 in Lisbon, Portugal) is a Portuguese singer and musician, of Cape Verdean descent. Her compositions are based on traditional Cape-Verdean music as for example the Morna, Funaná and Batuque, and influenced by African and contemporary Western music. Lura was born in Portugal to Cape Verdean parents in 1975. Her father came from Santiago and her mother from São Nicolau. Initially she wanted to become a dancer or a swimming instructor. She became a singer at the age of seventeen when Juka, an artist from São Tomé and Príncipe, asked her to sing a duet with him for a music album. The album became a success, and subsequently she participated in productions by artists such as Bonga, Tito Paris, Paulo Flores and Paulino Vieira. In 1996 she recorded her first album Nha Vida with her own compositions. In 1997 she participated in the AIDS benefit compilation album Onda Sonora: Red Hot Lisbon produced by the Red Hot Organization among famous artists such as Caetano Veloso, Marisa Monte, Djavan, Bonga and Teresa Salgueiro. Further album productions and concerts all over Europe followed. In 2007 she sang her song Morna in the film Fados by Spanish film director Carlos Saura."

Miko the Kitty: On September 12 Cape Verde celebrates its National Day. This amazing country consists of 10 different islands off the coast of Western Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. The once uninhabited islands are now a buzzing center for tourism. Having incredible high rocky mountains, beautiful white sand beaches and stunning deserts, the country offers a variety of contrasting landscapes ready to be discovered. http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/1729942.jpg
Places to visit and not to miss include Mount Fogo, the only active volcano in the country and Santo Antão, an area filled with spectacular canyons and valleys. The beaches of Boa Vista and Sal are popular places too and ideal for practicing windsurfing, snorkeling or scuba diving. Don’t forget to experience some of the Creole culture; try foods such as Cuscuz, a traditional breakfast or the Cachupa, Cape Verde’s national dish. Don’t miss also a shot of Grog, a traditional sugar cane liquor made on the islands.
Finally you shouldn’t miss listening to groups play Morna music. Cape Verde is still relatively young to tourism so there is still a feeling of untouched and authentic traditional culture around the islands. This destination is definitively a place not to miss for the adventurer within you!
