Palenque is an ancient Mayan city located about 500 miles (800 km) southeast of Mexico City. It lies in northern Chiapas, near the bottom of a highland, overlooking a vast plain. Its ancient name was Lakamha (“Big Water”) and its modern name comes from the nearby Spanish colonial settlement of Santo Domingo de Palenque. Although probably known to the local modern Maya, it was rediscovered by European explorers in the 18th century and even elicited the interest of King Charles III of Spain.

Next to Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, he is considered one of the most influential painters in the history of Mexican muralism. His large murals and frescos are imbued with depictions of the political and social situation in Mexico during the 20th century. Siqueiro’s works are often seen as critics to capitalism and the Mexican government of his time."
