He is considered the most successful painter to beautifully reproduce historical scenes of the country. One of his best-known works is "Oath of the Thirty-Three Easterners (1878)" (in Spanish: El juramento de los Treinta y Tres), an oil on canvas (5,64m x 3,11m).
